How To Get Hired

If you are looking to get hired for an office position in a plumbing office or a HVAC office here are some tips on how to get that job. When people say first impressions mean a lot, it is true. The first impression does not come from the interview but from your resume.

Your resume is a reflection of you and if your resume is scattered and incomplete then the chances of you getting called in for an interview are slim to none. Here are some tips for writing a good resume.

Tip # 1: Keep it short: Employers don’t want to read about the last 10 years of your life. If you have had more than 5 jobs only put down the last 5. Keep the resume confined to one page.

Tip # 2: Don’t embellish. Keep your experience short and to the point. Don’t write a story about your last job in the resume. List the company name, years when you started and when you left and write where your expertise lies.

For Example: ABS Inc, any town USA, and 2000- 2008

Duties included: accounts payable, answering the phone and payroll.

Tip # 3: Make sure your resume is honest. If you put down that you know how to do something just to get the job, you are wasting your time and the companies. If you can’t do something mention that you are a quick leaner and you want to learn.

Tip # 4: Always try to leave a land line phone number. Many people put their cell numbers on their resumes. While there is nothing wrong with that, cell phone batteries die and signals can be lost. A land line with a reliable answering machine will guarantee that you will get the call.

Now that your resume has past phase one, you have to be prepared for the interview. Dress appropriately; even if the company is casual and small, you should let the boss dictate the dress code. Always dress for success.

Here are some more tips on the interview:

Tip # 1: Be early. Make sure that you are at least 15 minutes early. It shows the employer that you want the job.

Tip # 2: Always bring a copy of your resume. Even though you already sent one in, always bring another copy.

Tip # 3: Speak clearly and answer each question with some thought. Don’t cater your answers to the questions just to get the job. If you do that the employer may see through it and you won’t get the job.

Tip # 4: Be honest. Your best chance to get the job is to keep your resume and your interview honest. Don’t say what you think they want to hear. Be yourself and you will do great.
