Adjusting the burner flame is very important and is only recommended to do by someone that is fully trained in oil burner repair because this could take several adjustments of the air intake and the C02 level has to be checked as well. Many homeowners take for granted that their boilers are going to work year after year. But that is when the worst thing happens, right in the middle of winter the boiler breaks down. So, the question is When Should I Have My Boiler Serviced? The answer is every year, especially if you have an older boiler. In some places in the United States boilers are working overtime with the climate change and there is no better time than before heating season to have your boiler checked.

You should not check the boiler yourself unless you know what you are doing. Call a qualified boiler technician they will come out and do a through inspection of the boiler and they will make any necessary recommendations. But there are some things that you can do that could help maintain the life of the boiler. Safety is first, be very careful when working around the boiler area. Keep the surrounding area clean and free from debris.
Take the time to understand the boiler and how it works. Always keep handy the manuals and any literature that came with the boiler. Know about the major components and always read the troubleshoot section of the manual. You can start by checking the gauges. Every boiler has a sight glass or gauge, make sure that the water levels and the gauges are at the proper levels. You can find out the correct levels from reading the manuals.
Most gauges should read less than 30 pounds of pressure, if the gauges reads more then you have a problem with the boiler and you should call a technician right away. 12 to 15 pounds is usually the ideal pressure. Another way that you can help maintain your boiler is by keeping the heating surfaces clean and dust free. Never place a flammable or combustible materials by the boiler.
By doing your part to keeping the boiler maintained, you can save yourself some money if repairs are needed. The more that you do for the boiler the fewer problems your technician will have. By having the tech come out, they will notice even the smallest problems which will save you money but them taking care of it now rather than after it turns into a bigger problem.
While it may be a bit expensive for a tech to come out, it is worth the money now rather than have to spend more later if there is a problem.

One part that is most important is the Burner. The Burner is the heat source of the boiler. It is here in the burner where the flame is starts and it is used to heat up the boiler. The burner hood works in conjunction with the burner to ensure that the hot air is being directed to the proper places. The burner transformer is part of the burner system that has the capacity to raise or lower the voltage of electricity that is going through the system. Important in the area of efficiency.
Another important piece of the puzzle is the Blower Wheel. This is a squirrel cage style wheel and the purpose of the blower wheel is to help the hot air flow into the zones of the house. If the blower wheels are clogged then chances are you are not getting any hot air though the vents. Sometimes the blower wheels can be fixed and other times they may need to be replaced.
It can be very confusing when looking into replacing parts to a boiler, especially if you never had to before. If you are not mechanically inclined, you will of course hire someone to do the troubleshooting and the repairs. But it is still good to know the parts and what they do so you can understand what the technician is talking about.
The blast tube of the boiler is for the gases from the fire ignited to start the boiler. The blast tube will help direct the gases from the fire into the boiler system. Another part that if clogged may force the boiler not to operate efficiently is the boiler nozzle. The nozzle is a short neck connector that is installed on the boiler drum or the boiler shell for the fluid going either in or out of the boiler. The nozzle can also be described as a spout where the fluid will flow from.
Oil pump is a pump that creates pressure so the oil being pumped through the boiler. The gears of the pump actually turn to build enough pressure to circulate the oil. If the oil pump goes then the boiler will have some problems. If you start to notice the boiler not acting right, call a technician right away. If the problem is the oil pump then you want to have it check out. The difference in time is if you get the problem diagnosed early you may not have to replace the entire pump, it could just need some bearings and a new seal.

Pex Tubing and Fittings
Depending on where you may live, Pex may sound old school to you or it may be a new term. Pex is more scientifically known as Cross Linked Polyethylene. It is basically a form or style of tubing, which is commonly used in Hydronic Heating System but not limited to domestic water piping and even insulation. It can be used in conjunction with natural gas or even a hot topic today of offshore oil drilling.
But homeowners are hearing the term Pex more and more. Pex started out in the 1930’s but it really wasn’t useful until the 1970’s but it was still expensive so it wasn’t used much. There have been different processes used to create Pex and each one was upgraded until a less expensive and better process was created. People who live in Southern States have heard of Pex first because it wasn’t allowed in the Northern States until the last few years.
In 2007, California put a law down that Pex can be used but it has to be determined if the case warrants Pex or if other material could just as easily do the job. More builders and plumbers in California are frustrated at the States’ insistence to use copper before Pex.
Pex in its earlier stages had a bad reputation. It was a concern that Pex Tubing would kink up and create problems down the line. But changes as we have mentioned have made Pex a durable Plumbing Product. In some states, Pex has even been used for dental fillings.
There are different fittings created from Pex, there is tubing and fittings. Pex ranges in sizes from ¼” to about 4″. The most commonly used sizes are ½”, ¾” and 1″.
Why has Pex become such a hot topic? One reason is that Pex has found a place in residential water plumbing. The reason why is because of the flexibility of Pex. For example, you could actually turn Pex about 90 degrees simply by using an adapter but if you were to do the same with PVC or copper they would all need to have elbow joints which would not be as strong or as reliable.
Plus, Pex is less expensive which may be the draw to the concept. Sometimes in certain applications it may be best to use PVC or Copper for a longer lasting life but it has been said that Pex can last anywhere from 50 to 200 years. There are going to be plumbers who prefer copper to Pex but Pex looks like it is here to stay and if you are planning a plumbing job, ask your plumber about the advantages and disadvantages to Pex on your job.
