Being a secretary in the HVAC and Plumbing field can have their perks. I was a secretary for 7 years at a HVAC company on Long Island. It can be boring because for women plumbing and heating isn’t very exciting. So you have to rely on the others in the office to make it fun for you. During the holiday season it is the best time to be a secretary in a small office. When I was a secretary I would get these great gifts.
High’s and Low’s of being a secretary
It may sounds great being the only girl in an all male office but the truth is it can be good and bad. Let’s start with the good, most of time, the guys are really nice to you and they want to be the favorite of the girl in the office. It can be easier to get away with not knowing some of the other terminology in the office. For example, when you call a vendor and they ask you a question on something that you are ordering and you have no clue what they are talking about, it can be great because the vendors who are mostly men will take a few minutes and look up the information for you.

Learning the Terminology
When I first started out as a secretary I knew that part of my job would be to order parts and materials. For the most part, everything that I had to order was basic things like pumps, cage units, steam traps and hardware. Then one day I came back from lunch and there was an order form on my desk. I looked at and saw that the item I had to order was called a Petcock. My first thought was that the guys were messing with me. Then after about an hour, I went to ask my supervisor and she had never heard of it, so I put the paper aside and went on with my day.

Cooling Off
One Monday at work my friend Linda and I were working in the office and we wanted to have some fun. Tom the shop manager would always come into the office and ask us to order something or call someone to let them know their equipment was ready. One day when Tom was talking to Linda I squirted Tom with a tiny water gun. We kind of started the war. When Mark ( company prankster ) came back from the office he got into the action as well. Come and get it
There is always one guy at work that we all hate. This guy we will call Sam was annoying and he thought he knew everything and he thought he was the best mechanic in the company. When I first started I kept to my myself and soon enough Sam was getting on my nerves.

Polly want a cracker
One day I was at work and most of the time, it can be pretty boring. But if you have some great people to work with it can be fun. One day the other secretary and I were in the office and it was 4:00 and she was getting ready to go home. We had a fairly long day and we both kind of looked forward to the field crew coming back to the office at the end of the day because they always had something funny to say or there was some type of drama going on.
You may be surprised
Most of the people that us secretaries deal with are vendors. Our dealings with them are strictly on the phone. The more you speak to these people you start to think about what these people look like. If some guy at the local supply store sounds cute, you may be in for a rude awakening.
